Obituary WINIFRED D. SECREST Died peacefully in her sleep in Tacoma, Washington, on October 9, 2008. Born in Tacoma on August 21, 1923, to Dan and Virginia Sorensen, the third of four children. Win was raised in National, near Ashford, WA. The family moved back to Tacoma in 1938, where she attended Gualt and Lincoln High Schools. With the outbreaj of WWII, she worked for Boeing aircraft in Tacoma, and was an original "Rosie the Riveter", working on the wing sections of the B-17 bomber. Later, she worked at the Pacific Match Factory. She loved to dance & was a great ‘jitter-bugger'. In 1945 she met Earl R. "Smiley" Secrest at a USO activity, and they were marries for nearly 40 years. For 20 of those years she moved around the U.S. and Germany several times while Earl served in the U.S. Army. Their son Charles was born in 1946, their daughters Mary in 1949 and Therese in 1952. Win was preceded in death by her husband, her brother Vigil Sorensen, her sister Margaret Bessey, and her daughter, Mary. She is survived by her son Charles & daughter-in-law Patricia of Seattle, her daughter Therese Zacher of Fircrest, sister Patricia Pitsch, 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Win was a member of one of the founding families of Sacred Heart Church in Tacoma and a member of the Altar Society. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2008, at 10:00am at Sacred Heart Church, 4520 McKinley in Tacoma with Fr. John Jennings officiating and Fr. William Lane concelebrating. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Wednesday evening at Gaffney Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to St. Vincent de Paul in care of Sacred Heart Church.
