Susan Carol (Freeman) Hoffman

May 2, 1938 — September 3, 2015

Obituary Susan Carol Freeman Hoffman Susan Carol Freeman Hoffman passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2015 in Tacoma, Washington, with loving family at her side. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1938 and grew up with her two older sisters, Elaine and Lois, and brother, Richard, guided by their wonderful mother, Anna, after the early passing of their devoted father, Abraham. She attended Coventry Elementary, Roxborough Junior High School, and Heights High School in Cleveland Heights. Susan lived in Seattle since the early 1970's and spent many days and evenings enjoying Tacoma with her daughter and her family. The first in her family to leave the Cleveland area, she met her husband, Allan S. Hoffman, in San Francisco in 1961 and married in 1962. They moved to Boston in 1963 where they had their two children, David and Lisa. Susan studied studio arts, arts education, and art history at Syracuse University and Case Western Reserve University. She taught art to children, a life-long passion, in Cleveland, Boston, and Seattle, including the Cleveland Museum of Art. While living in Boston, she took time for her own artistic endeavors, showing her work as well. After having children, she returned to graduate school at the University of Washington pursuing her doctorate in Communications. Always trailblazing, Susan then started a video production business, Intermedia Inc., which now distributes education media materials. Susan was a strong, independent, creative, artistic, and intelligent woman. She was a role model and inspiration for many and committed herself personally and professionally to progressive causes and women's rights. She loved to cook and feed family and friends, talk about politics, read, garden, travel, eat well, and explore the world; but her greatest love was her family and the grandchildren who called her Grammy and ran to her whenever she came to visit. She will be remembered for her grace, compassion, elegance, and beauty. Susan is predeceased by her father, Abraham L. Freeman; her mother, Anna N. W. Freeman; and her sisters, Elaine Kepner and Lois Goulder (Richard). She is survived by her brother, Richard Freeman (Lenora); her husband, Allan S. Hoffman; and her children, David L. Hoffman, Lisa M. Hoffman; son-in-law, William L. Driscoll; and the grandchildren she adored, John Saul and Anna. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2015 at 3:30pm at Temple Beth El in Tacoma. Interment at Home of Peace Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, and in recognition of Susan's passion for education and the arts, we suggest gifts in her honor go to the Tacoma Art Museum in support of arts programs in partnership with the Children's Museum of Tacoma; or to The Religious School Fund at Temple Beth El.
