Obituary Sister Mary Agnes Sullivan Sister Mary Agnes Sullivan, OP (Mary Timothy), a Tacoma Dominican died peacefully at St. Joseph's Residence in West Seattle, April 25, 2010. She was 87 years old. Sister Mary Agnes was born in Seattle on July 29, 1922 to Amelia Miller Sullivan and Timothy Sullivan. She attended Holy Rosary School and graduated from West Seattle High School in 1939. She worked for a year before entering the Tacoma Dominican Sisters at Marymount Tacoma on July 2, 1941. She received the Dominican habit and name Sister Mary Timothy on January 4, 1943 and pronounced her final vows on January 8, 1946. Her parents, brother, Timothy Sullivan, and nephew Michael Sullivan preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister-in-law Peggy Sullivan, nieces and nephews Kerry (George) Burrows, Sean (Stacy) Sullivan, Meg Sullivan Lucia, Dan (Nancy) Sullivan, Chris (Doug) Bennett and numerous grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She is also survived by members of her Tacoma Dominican Community. During most of her ministerial life, Sister Mary Agnes was in some form of education. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Seattle University in 1948 and a Master of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1962. In addition she participated in many workshops and conferences related to teaching and administration. Sister Mary Agnes began her teaching at Marymount in Tacoma WA. She also taught at St. Edward School, Blanchet High School, and Holy Rosary Grade and High School, Seattle; St. Patrick School and Aquinas Academy, Tacoma; Lourdes Academy, Ellensburg; and Garces Memorial High School, Bakersfield, CA. She also served as principal of Holy Rosary Grade School, Holy Rosary High School, and Aquinas Academy. She served as librarian for 14 years at Orting High School from 1971-1985. She was a member of the initial Blanchet staff as well as the first principal in the "new" Holy Rosary High School building. Following retirement from full-time teaching and administration, Sister Mary Agnes did substitute teaching at Holy Names Academy and Eastside Catholic High School. She also served as a part-time librarian for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Bellevue, helped to set up parish libraries in Issaquah and Kent, served as an assistant archivist for the Tacoma Dominican Community, and was a member of Cabrini Ministries at St. Mary's Parish in Seattle. Sister Mary Agnes was actively involved in peace and justice activities on the local, national and international levels. For a number of years she, along with others, traveled to Fort Benning, GA to participate in the annual protests against the School of the Americas. In her spare time, she loved to hike, visit with her friends and make blackberry and raspberry jellies. For a number of years she lived at the Chancery Apartments and loved the proximity to the Cathedral and to the Seattle Public Library. Services for Sister Mary Agnes include viewing from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at Gaffney Funeral Home, 1002 S. Yakima Ave., Tacoma, Friday, April 30, Vigil Service at St. Joseph Residence (4800 37th Ave. SW, Seattle) at 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 2, with the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, May 3, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Residence.
