Obituary Sister Mary Justin (Agnes) McCarthy, OP Sister Mary Justin (Agnes) McCarthy, OP, died suddenly in Riverside, California, following complications from hip surgery. Born January 8, 1931 in Dunmanway, County Cork, Ireland she attended schools in County Cork. She graduated from the National University of Ireland with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree. After her religious profession as a Dominican Sister, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Seattle University, and a Master of Science Degree from Dominican University, San Rafael, California. A lifelong learner and teacher, Sister Justin also attended numerous short-term programs and conferences. Sister Justin entered the Dominican Sisters of Tacoma, Washington on August 4, 1954 and made profession on July 7, 1956. This July she would have celebrated her Golden Jubilee of religious profession. She began her United States teaching career at Assumption School, Bellingham, WA. She spent the next 41 years as a secondary math and science teacher at Aquinas Academy and Mount St. Dominic Novitiate both in Tacoma, WA; Garces Memorial High School, Bakersfield, CA; St. Anthony High School, Long Beach, CA; and most recently at Notre Dame High School, Riverside, CA. She retired from classroom teaching in 1998 and since then has been involved with ministry to the elderly and homeless and tutoring both students and adults through a literacy program. She was predeceased by her parents Julia O'Sullivan and Jeremiah McCarthy. In addition to her Tacoma Dominican Community she is survived by her brother Dermot McCarthy of Dunmanway, County Cork, Ireland; and her sister Mary Rice of Manchester, England and numerous nieces and nephews.
