Rose Marie (Meier) Clements

Born: December 4th, 1934, Columbus, OH

Death: March 18th, 2025, Spirit Lake, ID

Rose was born December 4th, 1934 to Girard Anthony and Mary Catherine (Mattingly) Meier. She was the seventh of their eight children. In 1947 the family moved to Mt. Liberty, OH where her father owned and operated a small store and butcher shop until his death in 1951.

Her family then moved to Mt Vernon, OH where she attended grade and high school at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Rose worked at Sears Roebuck & Co for a brief time after graduating from high school until assistant pastor Fr Jarabeck asked her to become the first secretary for St Vincent De Paul, she accepted and worked there until 1955.

In the spring of 1952 she met her future husband, James T. Clements, Jr, and they began dating. They were married at St. Vincent de Paul December 31st, 1955.

Due to her husband’s Air Force career the couple lived many places until 1967 when her husband was assigned to McChord AFB, Tacoma, WA where they settled permanently upon his retirement in 1977.

For most of her life, Rose was a dedicated housewife and mother. She did not work outside the home until her youngest son entered grade school. Rose then worked as cook at Visitation Catholic School for a few years before taking a position with Farmer’s Insurance Group on Mercer Island from where she retired in 1996.

Rose may have retired but never stopped working. She was very active at Visitation Catholic Church, she was secretary for several years, ran the parish food bank, was a Eucharistic minister and also the parish representative on the St. Vincent de Paul council.

Despite her active life, Rose said, “I truly feel my vocation in life was to be a mother, so to display my children!”

She is survived by her children, Phillip G. Clements, Sr (Debra); Michelle Marie (Clements) Hudders (Richard); James Thomas Clements, III, (Donna); Jeanette Marie (Clements) Schueller (Matthew); Yvonne Marie (Clements) Newcomer (William); Matthew Charles Clements; Kenneth Joseph Clements (Traci); William Anthony Clements (LeRei); seventeen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; sister Alice Loretta (Meier) Latham; brother-in-law Kenneth Harold Clements (Joyce); sister-in-law Roseann Clements, many nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews spread throughout the country.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Girard Anthony and Mary Catherine Meier; husband James T. Clements, Jr; daughter Anna Marie Clements; siblings Bernard Henry Meier (Teresa); Richard Eugene Meier (Florine); Francis Aloysius Meier (Helen); Mary Ellen (Meier) Manley (Richard); William Anthony Meier; and James Joseph Meier (Virginia).
