Robert Bernard Johnson died June 5, 2024 in Tacoma, WA. He was born on April 17, 1940 to Bernard and Ann Johnson in Tacoma. He is survived by his wife Maryelen their children Lisa (Dave Rapoza), Daniel, Bernie (Andrea), Paul, and Andrea Sykes. His Sister Janet (Bill) Jarmon eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Bob had a lifetime of achievements to be proud of. He graduated from Stadium High School in 1958, where he played basketball and golf. He continued his education at Seattle University where he was a leader on the championship golf team, which finished with a 17-0 record. He is in the Hall of Fame at Seattle University as well as the Pierce County Hall of Fame for his achievements in golf.
Following his education, he joined the US Navy and served during the Cuban Misel Crisis.
He made his mark on Tacoma by winning numerous amateur golf tournaments, including Fort Lewis, Brookdale, Fircrest and Tacoma City championships. He captured the Fircrest Golf Club Championship in both 1959 and 1960.
Following Bobs return from the Navy he met Maryelen on a blind date in 1962. Bob and Maryelen married on December 26th, 1964 starting a family that would grow to five children and eight grandchildren.
He worked for many years as a Tacoma Longshoreman and a professional golfer on the PGA tour playing in three US Opens and one Senior US Open. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed fishing the Columbia River and golfing and spent 21 years snow birding to Arizona. Bob was a family man, a hard worker, and a friend to many. He valued his relationships and took care of everyone around him. Bob was the most generous man you could ever have the pleasure of knowing. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Bob loved to share stories of his travels and adventures on the golf tour. He had an impeccable memory and loved to tell stories about his family and his childhood. He was always happiest when he was surrounded by family and friends!!
Bob was a very large presence and filled every room with love and laughter. Our world was a better place with him in it. God bless you, Bob!! You will remain in our hearts forever!!!
