Obituary On September 12, 2006, Miriam Kelso passed away at the University Place Care Center with her family by her side. She was born October 15, 1916 at her grandparents' home in Regents Park, now known as Fircrest, to Frank and Bessie Stephens. The home was built by her grandparents Charles and Luella (Sears) Thompson, the first home in Fircrest. Miriam married her grade-school sweetheart Maurice Kelso on August 29th, 1940, enjoying more than 58 years together. They had one son Melvin. Miriam and Mel followed Maury back East while he served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Miriam was a devoted mother, actively involved in the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts while Mel was a member. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Chair of the Frank McClary Scholarship Fund for medical students. Miriam was a care-giver for family and friends for many years. She loved the seashore and sea life. TCC biology instructors visiting Titlow Beach asked her to talk to their students about environmental changes to the area. Because of her long residence in University Place and Day Island she was an historical source for local authors. Miriam is survived by her son Melvin (Edna) Kelso, her sister Jeanne Hoskins, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family is very thankful that during the last 3 years of her life Miriam was very happy in assisted living at the Laurel House at Narrows Glen with many dear friends and their very caring staff. We also thank the very caring nurses at the University Place Care Center for their excellent care for Mother and Franciscan Hospice for the great care and comfort for Mother and her family. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the Gaffney Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment at Tacoma Mausoleum. Viewing at the funeral home Monday from 12:00 to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Franciscan Hospice & Palliative Care, 2901 Bridgeport Way W., University Place, WA 98466, Attn: Jan.
