Mildred Mary Grant

August 3, 1917 — January 5, 2011

Obituary Mildred, age 93, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2011. She is reunited with Harley, her husband of 57 years, who passed away on December 20, 2010. Born in Culbertson, Nebraska, on August 3, 1917, Mildred Fitzgibbons grew up on a farm with her twin sister Marguerite and four older siblings. After graduation from high school and a rural teacher's college, Mildred taught grades 1-8 in a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska for five years. In 1941, Mildred moved to Spokane, WA and worked in the accounting department at Sears for 26 years. She transferred to Seattle and then Tacoma, where she retired in 1983. Mildred was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling, social gatherings, card games, and dancing. She was the family historian, and kept family and friends up to date by writing letters throughout her life, as recently as a week before her passing. Mildred was passionate about music and sports, especially the Seattle Mariners and Nebraska Cornhuskers. She knew every player and their stats! Married in 1953 to Harley Grant, they raised four children and were devoted grandparents to their five grandchildren. Mildred is survived by children Doug (Dee), Jan (Dave), Jim (Jessica), Kay (Mike) and grandchildren Brooke, Grant, Zach, Hannah, and Luke. Her Irish eyes, contagious smile, and exuberance will never be forgotten. Mom will be missed by many but welcomed by those who have gone before her. We love you Mom. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 13th, 2011, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Tacoma, where Mildred was a parishioner for over 50 years. The family suggests any donations be sent to St. Charles Borromeo School. Please leave online condolences at www.GaffneyCares.com. Arrangements by Gaffney Funeral Home, 253-572-6003.
