Obituary Melvin R. Smith died January 2, at his Puyallup home surrounded by his family. Born June 25, 1947 in Bakersfield, CA grew up on the So Cal coast and migrated to Washington in 1983. Mel was a member of Holy Disciples Catholic Church, Lipoma Firs Golf Course and Lake Trask Timber Trail Association. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. Mel clocked more than 1000 hours as volunteer in the surgery waiting area at St. Joseph Medical Center. Mel is survived by his wife of 23 years, Barbara Bowser Smith, daughter, Vicki Smith and sister, Melvina Wilkinson, Lynwood, CA, brother, Willie L. ( Sally) Carson, Tacoma; step-children, Angeline (Rick) Orr, Ronald and Robert Bowser, Andrea (Steve) Winkel; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: sister, Martha Ann Zachary, brother, Arthur Smith, first wife Linda, stepsons, Raymond and Russell and grandson Jacob. The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Raed Fahmy, Dr. John Smoots and Franciscan Hospice. Vigil service and viewing will be Friday, January 7, 2011, 7:00 pm at the Gaffney Funeral Home Chapel, Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 8, 2011 11:00 am at Holy Disciples Catholic Church.
