Obituary Mary Josephine Mason Mary Josephine Flood was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania on August 21, 1933, the daughter of William J. Flood and Isabelle Mackin Flood. Mary grew up in Baldwin, Long Island. She graduated from St. Christopher's Elementary School in Baldwin, and from St. Agnes Academic School in a nearby village. After attending secretarial school she was employed as an executive secretary by P. Lorillard Company in Manhattan. On December 26, 1955 she married James Mason, an attorney who was then serving as a conscript, and who was sent to Fort Lewis a few days later. They lived in St. Patrick's parish in Tacoma until August 8, 1957, when they returned to Long Island. They came back to Tacoma in 1961 and made their home in St. Charles Borromeo parish in 1962. Mary was an active parishioner at St. Charles, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the choir, and in other capacities. She strongly supported pro life causes, and was a co-founder of the Pierce County chapter of Voice for the Unborn, the predecessor of Washington State Human Life. She manifested her pro life commitment by opening her home to pregnant girls and women who needed shelter. Mary's life revolved around her church and family, which included close friends who became honorary relatives. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and was never happier than when at a family gathering. She is survived by her husband, James; her sisters, Isabelle Andrews, and Dolores Kolmel; her daughters, Victoria Mason, Alice Hori, Jane Medrzycki, and Roseanne Hoya; fifteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mary was also the mother of two babies who died prior to their birth, and whom she looked forward to meeting in Heaven.
