Obituary Marian Rose Cahill McGonigal Born at home in Cicero, IL. October 24, 1921. Passed away in her daughter Mary's home in Fife, WA May 21st, 2009. She was held as a baby in her grandfather's arms as he danced the Irish jig. He died the next day. Home, Family, Catholic Faith and Celebration defined her life. She is preceded in death by: her father George Cahill, her mother Margaret McCarthy Cahill, her brothers Terence, James, Robert (Joan) and Kevin (Betty) and her brothers-in-law Jack McGonigal and Frank (Gloria) McGonigal and her sister-in-law Laurie Cahill. She is survived by extended family: her brother Gerald, her sister-in-law Mary Jane Cahill and 22 nieces and nephews living in Chicago, the Greater Midwest and California. Marian graduated from St. Mary's High School and attended Mundelein College in Chicago. She studied English and had a lifelong love of reading novels. During and after WWII, she worked at the Hawthorne Works of the Western Electric Company in Chicago, IL. She was married at Mary Queen of Heaven parish in Cicero, IL. to her faithful husband of almost 64 years, Emil (Mac) Victor McGonigal on June 29, 1946. Together they raised three loving children: Terence Patrick (Suzette), Timothy Dennis and Mary Denise; Grandchildren Keats (April), Brandan (Shawnda) and Shannon (Dan). Marian and her family moved from Chicago to California in 1962 and lived primarily on the West Coast. Marian devoted her life to loving her family, hosting numerous celebrations for family and friends, working for Weight Watchers International, being involved in PTA, Scouts and many organizations in her Catholic parish. Her generous spirit infused hope in all who had the privilege of knowing her. In retirement, Marian and Mac enjoyed many extended trips to Ireland, Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean. She also journeyed from Florida to the Pacific Northwest to participate in family celebrations and weddings with her daughter and grandchildren. She made sustaining friendships wherever she traveled and lived. In the final journey of her life, Marian lived with her daughter Mary and fought a courageous battle against the debilitating effects of aging. Marian's family is deeply grateful for those who supported her during this journey on a daily basis including caregiver Katie McGlassion, Dr. Sam Wanis, the Franciscan Hospice Team and members of Lakewood Presbyterian Church. All who visited Marian during this period were inspired by her courage, joy, and hope in the reality of Christian resurrection. Viewing will be at Gaffney Funeral Home, 1002 S. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday May 27th, 2009 8:30 am followed by Funeral Mass at 9:00 am at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 2303 54th Ave. S., Fife WA 98424.
