Obituary Lucille Feist Hurst, 93, passed the evening of February 18, 2010 with family and friends by her side. Lucille Feist was born the daughter of Theophil and Jessie Feist on March 24, 1916 in New York, NY. She was a graduate of Annie Wright Seminary, Barnard Liberal Arts College for Women in Manhattan, New York City, and a graduate of the University of Washington. She was married to Dr. Cecil Hurst in Tacoma, in 1940 and was widowed in 1954. She began her civic career at Barnard College when she was elected to the Student Council of 25 for the class of 1937. Among her numerous and varied accomplishments; Lucille was awarded the Brotherhood Award in May, 1977 by the Tacoma-Pierce County Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. In November of 1982 Lucille was honored by the Human Relations Commission for her service to the community with a Citizens' Award. In 1990, Friends of the Martin Luther King Library in Tacoma, commissioned Lucille to create a bust of the civil rights leader, on display today. She recently received a Lifetime Learning Award from Tacoma Community College for her years of sculpting and artistic influence. Lucille was recently featured in the Washington State History Museum's Exhibit; "A History of Tacoma's Civil Rights Struggle" and recently was added to the Tacoma Civil Rights Honor Roll. Lucille's many civic duties throughout the years also included; President of the Tacoma Section of the National Council of Jewish Women, Secretary of Faith Home, Charter Member of the Civic Ballet Board, Lifetime Member of the League of Women Voters, an active member of the Tacoma Rose Society, accomplished in Japanese flower arranging, a Life-Master of the American Contract Bridge League, Tacoma Urban Coalition, Model Cities Task Force and the United Nations Association. She was a longtime Treasurer and 50 year member for the Tacoma Branch of the NAACP, served on the County-City Anti-Poverty Board and was involved with the Open Housing Campaign in the 1960's. She served several terms on the Educational Service District 121 Board of Directors. She was a very active member of her Temple. She was a Past President of Temple Beth El and along with her tireless volunteering; she held many other offices and positions. She is survived by her three children, Richard, Janice and Jonathan. A Memorial Service and Reception will held on Sunday, February 28th, at 5:00 PM at Temple Beth El, 5975 S 12th St, Tacoma. A brief interment ceremony will be held on Wednesday February 24th, at the Home of Peace Cemetery, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, her children request that donations be made in honor of their mother to: Temple Beth El Beautification Fund, League of Women Voters, the NAACP, or the TCC Art Department.
