Obituary Leonard (Len) Henry Spanich, born August 27, 1929 (Hoquiam, Washington) passed away on February 14, 2009 in Tacoma. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Katherine Spanich. Len is survived by his wife Lillian Spanich of 57 years, daughters Char (Merv) Ward and Nancy (Marty) Waiss; grandchildren Jason, Meghan and Ashley; brother Rudy (Evelyn) Spanich and sister in law Charleen Barnes. Len's nieces and nephews were also important in his life, Karen (Randy) Kunkle, Hans (Missy) Barnes, Chris (Mary) Barnes, Kathy (Steve) Wise and Debbie (Mark) Ramstad. Len attended Stadium High school and graduated from the University of Puget Sound in business. He was a loyal member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and served as an active alumni. Len served in the Navy and was a proud member of the Tacoma Elks Lodge. He was employed by Heidelberg Brewery for over 20 years and then owned and operated Westspan Hauling. At the age of 79, he was not yet ready to retire. Len especially enjoyed spending time at "the beach" on Henderson Bay with family and friends and travel to Hawaii with Lillian. Len was a man of tremendous character and integrity. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him. A reception for friends and family will be held in Len's honor following the funeral service at 2:30, the Tacoma Elks Lodge (1965 South Union Avenue). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
