Lawrence E. (Larry) Dahl, a dedicated community member and esteemed engineer, passed away on June 8, 2023, surround by his family, at the age of 77. He was born in Tacoma, Washington in August 1945, and his legacy will be forever cherished by his family, friends, and the numerous organizations he selflessly served.
Larry was a loving husband to his wife Linda for 55 wonderful years. Together, they built a life filled with love, companionship, and shared experiences. He was a devoted father to his two grown children, a grandfather, and a great grandfather which was a source of pride and happiness for him.
Larry's educational journey began at Holy Rosary Grade School, where he laid the foundation for his future endeavors. He continued his studies at Bellarmine Preparatory School and Lincoln High School, all the while demonstrating a strong passion for learning and personal growth. He further pursued his academic interests at Tacoma Vocational-Technical School (now Bates Technical College), where he specialized in Highway-Civil Engineering.
In service to his country, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served with honor until his honorable discharge in August 1970. His military service further instilled in him a sense of discipline, dedication, and commitment to excellence.
Following his military service, Larry embarked on a fulfilling career with the City of Auburn, where he served as an Engineering Aid. His passion for public works and infrastructure development led him to join the Engineering Division of the City of Auburn's Public Works Department, a role he faithfully held for 42 years. Over the years, Larry excelled in his profession, progressing through various positions including Construction Inspector I and II, Construction Coordinator/Inspector, and ultimately serving as the Construction Manager. His expertise and attention to detail left an indelible mark on the countless projects he oversaw, contributing to the growth and development of the community he held dear.
Larry's dedication to the community extended far beyond his professional responsibilities. He actively participated in numerous organizations and served in various leadership roles. He was deeply involved with Holy Rosary Parents Club, where he volunteered his time from 1980 to 1993, including serving as Vice President and President. He also served on the Holy Rosary School Board for six years, three of which he spent as the Board President. Larry was a member of the Holy Rosary Parish Council for many years, as well as supporting St. Ann’s Parish, lending his insight and guidance to important decisions.
As an advocate for youth development, Larry dedicated his time to the Boy Scouts of America, serving as a registered adult leader. He made a lasting impact as an Assistant Cub Master for Pack 14 and Assistant Scout Master for Troop 123, positively shaping the lives of countless young boys during their formative years.
Larry's commitment to his community was further exemplified through his involvement with the South End Neighborhood Council, where he served as a board member and represented the council at the Community Council. He also contributed his expertise to the Urban Policy Committee, where he served as a member and chairperson.
Recognizing the importance of parks and green spaces, Larry served as a Park Commissioner for the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma. He took on the roles of Clerk and President during his tenure, leaving a lasting impact on the development and maintenance of parks within the community. His commitment to regional collaboration led him to serve as a member of the District Naming Committee and the Joint Municipal Action Committee.
In February 2001, Larry was appointed as a Tacoma City Council Member, dedicating his efforts to serving the city he loved. He contributed to various committees, including Public Safety, Pierce County Regional Council, Puget Sound Regional Council Growth Management Policy Board, Tacoma-Pierce County Employment and Training Consortium, and the Zoo Trek Authority. Additionally, Larry served as an alternate on the Law Enforcement Support Agency and Puget Sound Regional Council/Executive Board.
Larry Dahl was a man of integrity, kindness, and unwavering dedication. His contributions to his profession, community, and family will be remembered for generations to come. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and a deep love for Tacoma. Larry's memory will forever be cherished by his children, grandchildren, and all those fortunate enough to have known him.
Larry is survived by son Christopher Dahl (Ann-Marie), daughter Deborah Dahl-Smith (Mark); Grandchildren Kaelee Ann Jacoby, Breann Dahl-Smith, Nina-Marie Dahl, Stephen Dahl, and Jacob Dahl of Tacoma, and great-grandchildren Raelynn and Araya of Tacoma. Brother Ken Dahl (Mary) of Bellevue, Sister-in-laws Sandra Sneft (Richard) of Virginia, Sharon Elzner (William) of Tacoma, and Nieces, Melissa Dahl, Susan Dahl of Bellevue, Kathleen Huckle of Virginia, and Nephew Tim Krueger of Tacoma.
A memorial service to honor Larry's life will be held at Pope Saint John XXIII Catholic Church on Friday, July 14, 2023. The family kindly requests donations be made to either Metro Parks Tacoma or the Zoo Society.
