Julia Margaret Hiles

Obituary Julia Margaret Gallagher was born on November 23, 1926 in Bendena, Kansas to Roger and Ida May Gallagher. She died on June 9, 2011 at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Olympia, Washington. Julia was the third of ten children. The Gallagher family lived on a farm, and Julia attended school in Troy, Kansas. She graduated from Troy High School in 1944. Her family moved to Caldwell, Idaho in 1945. Julia was an excellent bowler, and held a bowling record in Caldwell for many years. Julia married Charles Hiles on July 3, 1948. The couple moved to Lakewood, Washington in 1950, where Charles became employed by Civil Service doing aircraft maintenance. They enjoyed square dancing and belonged to a square dancing club for many years. They had been married 61 years when Charles died in 2010. Julia is survived by their four children: Charlene Stanton of Valley Springs, California, Dolores Bruner of Aberdeen, Washington, Paul Hiles of Seattle, Washington, and Brian Hiles of Indianapolis, Indiana and nine grandchildren: Sarah Carossino, Christopher Bruner, Timothy Bruner, Nicholas Hiles, Michaela Hiles, Catherine Hiles, Maria Hiles, Charles Hiles, and Max Hiles. She is also survived by three brothers and two sisters: Jack Gallagher, Jim Gallagher, Roger Gallagher Jr., Ruth Ann Baker, and Peggy Ryan. One brother and three sisters died before her: Tom Gallagher, May Craft, Marie Lembke, and Mary Pat Gallagher. A grandson, Jonathan Bruner, also died before her. Julia was a homemaker most of her life, and was devoted to her family. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, cooking, and gardening. In 1978, Julia became the founding vice president of Washington State March for Life. She spoke to several civic and church groups about the value of human life and the tragedy of abortion. In 1983, she and Charles were awarded The Human Life Humanitarian Award, in recognition of efforts made to protect the dignity of human life. From 1982 to 1986, she managed the New Life Thrift Shop. It had two purposes, to raise money for March for Life, and to help the needy with no questions asked. Julia was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Lakewood.
