Obituary John Bernard Sutherland John B. Sutherland (also known to friends and family as Bernard, Jack, Suds and Johann) was born June 2, 1914 and passed away peacefully on June 6, 2008 at the age of 94. Born and raised in Tacoma by Swedish immigrant parents Erick and Bernhardina, he graduated from Stadium High School and from Washington State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Prior to his retirement, Jack worked as the West Coast Regional Sales Manager for Occidental Petroleum (formerly Hooker Chemical). For over 40 years, Jack belonged to the Tacoma Golf and Country Club, the Tacoma Lawn and Tennis Club, and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Jack was whole-heartedly proud of his Swedish heritage and late in life spoke Swedish and traveled to Sweden to visit his relatives as often as possible. He was also extremely proud to be a "WSU Cougar" and served as three time past president of the Washington State University Alumni Association. In the last 70+ years, Jack never missed an "Apple Cup". Jack was truly in a class of his own. Because of his positive, upbeat and friendly nature, he brought great joy and happiness to all those lucky enough to have known and loved him. He will be greatly missed. Jack is survived by his sister Berdine Kulla; daughter Sandy (and Skip) Casey; son Jim Sutherland; son-in-law Jim Boyd; grandchildren Jennifer (and Steve) Rich, Jim (and Jules) Boyd, Katherine (and Thiago Robert) Casey, and Ian Casey; great grandchildren Claire, Katie and Alison Rich; nephew Lee (and Lucy) Kulla; and niece Kari (and Harv) Widman.
