John Tony Sankovich

March 7, 1922 — October 30, 2006

Obituary John T. Sankovich, 84, died Monday, October 30, 2006 at St. Joseph Hospital. He was born in Aberdeen, moved to Eatonville and settled in Tacoma when he was 4 years old. John went through Tacoma Schools, graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940 and later attended the University of Washington. After high school graduation John joined the military and served in the South Pacific with the Paymasters Corps of the Second Marine Division. After the war John worked in the comptroller office. In 1949 he began his service for the City of Tacoma where he worked until his retirement as City Treasurer in 1979. After his retirement he went to work as the secretary for the Tacoma Elks Lodge, #174. Through his life John was an active bowler, fisherman and traveler. John gave back a lot to his community, serving as a Daffodilian for over 50 years, a board member and activist for United Way, South Tacoma Boys Club, the Downtown Lions and numerous other organizations. John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Sankovich and his first wife Eva C. Sankovich. He is survived by his second wife, Patricia Sankovich; daughters and their spouses; Diane (Jim) Hausske, Yakima, Mary (Steve) Sherman, Puyallup, Nancy Sankovich, Tacoma; son and his spouse John J. (Lori) Sankovich, University Place; brother in law, Roy Kanzler, Tacoma; sister in law, Bernice Kanzler, Davenport, WA; stepchildren, Dolly (John ) Reed, Tacoma, Clay Darling, Tacoma, Kathy (Jake) Zimmerman, Port Orchard, Frank Darling, Puyallup; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. John was an active member of St. Patrick Parish where his services will be held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, November 6, 2006 11:00 am; Vigil service will be held, Sunday, November 5, 2006 7:00 pm. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Washington Elks Therapy Program for Children, 4512 So. Pine St. Tacoma, WA 98409, or the Daffodil Festival at 823 W. Main Ste. C. Sumner, WA 98390.
