Obituary John Ruel Manning (Colonel, USA Retired) Born August 17, 1923 in Little Rock, Arkansas, John passed away on October 15, 2005. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shandelle; 4 children: Kathleen, John Jr., Melinda and Suzanne, their spouses; 10 grandchildren; and brother Roger. John proudly served his country for 32 years. In 1948, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and upon graduation was commissioned in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and served in the United States Marine Corps in WWII. John served during three wars and was highly decorated during his distinguished career. He was most proud of the Silver Star he received while serving in Vietnam, the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster, and the De Fleury Medal. John held a Master of Science Degree in Business Administration from George Washington University, was a graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and was a registered Professional Engineer. After retiring from active duty in 1977, he embarked on his second career with the State of Washington as an engineer with the Department of General Administration. John was active in his local community. He was a board member on the Retired Officers Council, head of the building committee for the addition/renovation of St. John Bosco, and a member of the MOWW. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, October 24, 2005, 10:30 a.m., preceded by a rosary at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 10508 112th St. SW, Lakewood, WA. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in John's name may be made to the Col. Patrick S.
