Obituary John F. Chapetta, 98, oldest son of the Chapetta family, born and raised in Roslyn, WA, died January 19, 2006. The son of Croatian immigrants, he was preceded in death by his parents, Oliva and John Chapetta, and all seven of his siblings: brothers Floyd "Peck" Chapetta, Roslyn, Joseph Chapetta, Tacoma, Anthony Chapetta, California, Charles Chapetta, Florida, sisters Katie Jonlich, Roslyn, Lorraine Gallwas and Mary Tomko, Tacoma. John began working in the coal mines of Roslyn as a teenager to help his parents. When the coal mines shut down he held various jobs. John is best know for his role as manager/player of the Roslyn baseball team in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. He moved to Tacoma when his beloved sister Katie died in 1973. John's major contribution was as a caretaker. A lifelong bachelor, he devoted his life to caring for others. He first cared for his father, then his disabled sister Katie; later he cared for his sisters Lorraine and Mary, and for several years lived with and cared for his younger brother Tony, who suffered from Alzheimer's. John was a child of the Depression and was frugal in his shopping habits but generous to all who needed his help. He had a keen mind and a delightful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. John is survived by his many nieces and nephews: James Gallwas, Bill Gallwas, Sharon Berthiume, Susie Sundahl, Gloria Beckley, Richard Tomko, Marie Culley, Anthony Chapetta Jr., Robin Fuduli, Bobbie Chapetta, Lisa Chapetta, Brian Chapetta, Hugo Chapetta, Henry Chapetta, David Chapetta and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 25, 2006, 12:10 pm St. Leo's Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited prior to Mass at 11:30 am, also at the church. Interment in Roslyn, WA.
