Joel Osborn Diven

Gig Harbor

Dr. Joel Osborn Diven, age 90, passed away on April 13, 2024. Born on February 2, 1934, to John and Ellen Diven, he was born and raised in Tacoma. Kind but a little shy, he formed friendships in his childhood that lasted throughout his life.

After graduating from Stadium High School, the University of Puget Sound, and Loyola of Chicago Dental School, Dr. Diven served as a Blue Water Vietnam veteran in the US Navy for 28 years. He retired at the rank of Commander and continued practicing dentistry for another 18 years, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his profession.

Dr. Diven was a kind and hard-working father who had his first of five children at age 23 and his last at age 52. His children were born in the '50s, '60s, '70s, and '80s, reflecting a life rich with family. He cherished time spent on road trips, boating, fishing, and skiing. He loved the beach, Paradise, and the Huskies. Often seen with a professional camera, he captured precious family moments. During his later years, he enjoyed having lunch at Harbor Lights with his childhood friends and playing with his youngest grandson, Xavier.

Dr. Diven is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joanne Wang Diven, who he affectionately regarded as the main reason for his long and fulfilling life. He is also survived by three of his children, Pat, Sean (Nicole), and Leilani, and four grandchildren, Jon, PC, Dustin, and Xavier. He was preceded in death by his son Michael, daughter Robyn, sister Joan Anderson, and his parents John and Ellen Diven.

A burial with honors will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery in Maple Valley/Kent on June 20, 2024, at 11:30 am, where he will be laid to rest alongside his son Michael and his father-and-mother-in-law, John and Helen Matchett. A Celebration of Life will follow at 1 pm at the Cliff House in Brown's Point/Tacoma. Friends and family are invited to bring pictures, stories, and memories to honor his remarkable life.

Dr. Joel Osborn Diven will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his service, dedication, and love for his family.
