Joan was born on October 15, 1940, in Tacoma and later was baptized and confirmed at St. Rita’s Catholic Church. Her family resided in South Tacoma, and she graduated from Clover Park, class of 58. Growing up, she had a passion and talent for music. One of her greatest memories was seeing Elvis perform at Lincoln Bowl in 1957.
As an adult, Joan sang in local clubs and Fraternal lodges. Her singing career changed into a hobby as she focused her attention on raising her two young boys. On occasion, when asked, Joan
would sing at retirement centers or for special events.
She joined the Greek Orthodox Church when she married George Panagiotu. She went on to become the President of the Daughters of Penelope, serving many terms. Joan had an outgoing
personality, was very giving and kind to all. Joan had a huge heart. She was a classy dresser and an avid Seahawks fan. She kept an impeccable house and was a fabulous cook. Her home
was always filled with scents of delicious Italian or Greek dishes.
Joan later became interested in the Jewelry business, and was a fixture at Weisfield’s Jewelers at the Tacoma Mall for many years. She received several accolades, including top salesclerk, assistant manager, and was a member of the Elite Diamond Jubilee club. Later, Joan and George opened Anthony Perry Jewelers in Fircrest.
Joan and George divorced after 28 years of marriage. Nine years later, Joan married Ron Thomas. They lived in University Place for 27 years. She is survived by her spouse Ron Thomas,
her two sons Tony (Debbie) Panagiotu and Perry Panagiotu, grandsons Christopher (Stephanie), Tyler (Spencer) and, great granddaughter Abigail Panagiotu, Goddaughter Tracy Knight, and
Godson Jonathan Wingard. She was preceded in death by her mother Johanna, father Primo and brother Fred Gasperetti.
A memorial service will be held at St. Rita’s Catholic Church on May 30th. Rosary at 10:30 am and Mass at 11:00 am. This will be followed by a brief private family only graveside service. A
reception to follow at 1:00 at Fircrest Golf Club.
