December 28, 1918 — May 7, 2011

Obituary James Woodrow Metcalfe Longtime resident of San Mateo, James Woodrow Metcalfe passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on May 7, 2011. Born in Louisville Kentucky on December 28, 1918, he was the son of Greta and Arthur Metcalfe, and the youngest brother of Larry and Tom Metcalfe. He lived in Louisville until he enlisted in the Army in 1942. Jim served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army during WWII. In 1945 he was honorably discharged from the service at Fort Lewis in Tacoma WA. It was there, in 1949, that he met his wife, Luigina of 59 years. Jim started working as a printing pressman in Tacoma and ultimately, in 1962, he moved his family to San Mateo CA. There he started his own company, Metcalfe Product Services, which he ran until his retirement in 1996. Jim's expertise was well known in the business forms industry throughout the United States and abroad for many years. His lectures were well received by industry notables. In 1989 he was inducted in "The Order of the Black Leaf ", an honorary society of the Manifold Forms Industry. His success in life enabled him to do his heart's calling, to take care of his family and help those who were in need. He was happiest when he was able to relieve the suffering of others. Jim was an avid golfer and found peace working in his beloved garden. He traveled extensively throughout his life and when possible his family traveled with him. Jim truly embraced life and lived it fully. He is survived by his loving wife, Luigina, son Jim and daughter Mikelanne. He leaves many nieces, nephews, a sister-in-law and many friends. Above all, Jim was a loving, generous husband and father. He will be greatly missed. Jim's request is to send donations to the cause of children's needs: St Jude Children's Hospital, SMILE, or your favorite charity for this cause. Services will be at Calvary Cemetery, 5212 70th St West, Tacoma WA, in the Visitation Chapel on May 23, 2011 at 2:30 pm. There will be a reception following for family and friends.
