Frederick

Hugh Scofield Atkins, 84, of Frederick, Maryland left us on January 14, from complications caused by Guillain Barre Syndrome, surrounded by his family. Hugh, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and neighbor, will always be remembered for his humor and love of a good pun.

Born on January 4, 1941, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska he was the son of Auburn and Ione Atkins and younger brother to Susan and Tom Atkins. Hugh was a career Marine serving 21 years and retiring as Lieutenant Colonel before his second career as a Social Security Administrative Law Judge in Providence RI. When he wasn’t watching the news, working on crossword puzzles, or traveling with Heidi, you would find him working on various projects involving wood. He was an avid student of history and the English language.

Hugh is survived by his wife of 58 years, Heidi, son, Scott (Aegina) and daughter Christiane (Matthew), brother Tom, and grandchildren Isabella Montequin, Annika Atkins, Lilliana Montequin, and Gavin Atkins, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Susan, and niece Amy.

The family is honoring Hugh’s wishes to forgo a memorial service. He did not like people making a fuss over him. In his honor, the family would like for those who knew and loved him to share their favorite story or stories about Hugh here and to raise a glass of red wine or beer in remembrance. If you feel inclined to donate in his memory his favorite charity was Doctor’s Without Borders.
