Howard Bernard Leichman

August 5, 1931 — October 23, 2013

Obituary Howard Leichman Howard Leichman, 82, passed away October 23, 2013, surrounded by family in hospice. Howard was born August 5, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY to Polish-Jewish immigrants Sam and Helen (Salt) Leichman. His first career was in business working for American Israeli Shipping and then with his father manufacturing belts and suspenders. After 15 years of working full time and going to night school, Howard graduated from Brooklyn College cum laude. In 1966, he moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington to begin his second career-teaching. Howard earned his PhD in English in 1972. He taught at a variety of universities, but most valued teaching community college students at Green River and Pierce College/Fort Lewis. Howard is preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Lila (1931) and Blossom (Leichman) Shelton (2009). Howard is survived by his wife of 43 years, Suzanne; daughter, Julia; son, Leland; his brother, Seymour Leichman; sister, Sandra (Leichman) Zanger; and many nieces and nephews. Howard was the epitome of "You can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but you can't take Brooklyn out of the boy." He was a character: funny, perverse, and deeply rooted in his enchantment with books, baseball, music, film, and the classroom. Graveside Services will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013, at 11:00am at Home of Peace Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to Franciscan Hospice, Grave Concerns: www.wshgraveconcerns.org, or to the General Fund at Temple Beth El. Please leave online condolences at www.gaffneycares.com. Arrangements by Gaffney Funeral Home, 253-572-6003.
