Our beautiful, kind, funny and always on the go mother, Gussie Jagod left us on Thursday, May 9th, just a few days shy of her 94th birthday, May 12th, Mother’s Day. She is joining Edward “Eddy” Jagod her beloved husband and our dad who left us in 2008.
Our mother was the true matriarch of not only our family, but of a much larger family of 100’s of kids and adults who she mentored since 1965 teaching Filipino folk dances. Her influence spammed multi generations-from her 1st dancers to their children and their grandchildren! Her influence on teaching the importance of knowing your Filipino roots was a lasting lesson she imparted to everyone who was fortunate enough to be under her tutelage.
One of her greatest pride was being one of the founders and the Cultural Director for the Tacoma based PAYO-Philpino American Youth Organization. Even as the original leaders moved on, she remained steadfast, devoting herself to mentoring and teaching students in Filipino cultural dances. Drawing from her rich career as a former professional dancer with the renowned Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, she infused her lessons with passion and expertise. Her impact extended beyond the dance floor, shaping the lives of countless students by instilling in them the values of community, Filipino pride, a love for dance, and the significance of coming together. Week after week, she provided a space where students and their families could come together to practice and gather. Through over 25 years of community organizing, many students spent their years at annual big festivals performing, creating cherished memories of togetherness, learning, and celebrating their culture with loved ones. Today, many of her students continue to carry her teachings, enriching their lives and perpetuating the spirit of her legacy.
Mom was recognized often throughout her lifetime for her devotion to community service. Amongst the many accolades, plaques and awards she received, on May 7th, 2008 Gussie Jagod Day was proclaimed by then Governor Christine Gregoire. That was an honor that mom was especially proud of.
Mom was a proud civil servant working as a hospital administrator at Madigan for over 35 years. While working full-time and raising her family, mom was able to go back and get her high school and AA diploma. Her determination, gumption and zest for life made her a pioneer in a time when many women didn’t have the options that they have now. Mom was independent, a risk taker and loved her family fiercely. She enjoyed a party, especially if there was dancing-she would be the first to hit the dance floor! Mom had no problem being the life of the party and that she was.
She leaves behind many loved ones: her sons Jay, Willie, Joey and Trini. Daughter-in-laws Maryjune, Linda and Ana. Granddaughter Francesca. Grandson Wesley and his wife Whitney. Great-grandson Makai. Her sister Lydia. Nieces Ruth, Monique, Cindy. Nephews, Lee, Chito, José, Bernardo, Doug, Tres, Bobo and many cousins and relatives both here and in the Philippines. Gratitude and love also to her wonderful caregivers, Helen and Melba who loved mom as their own.
