Puyallup

Gerald James Mayo, born on September 6, 1942 in Seattle, Washington was 82 years old when he passed away on February 3, 2025. Gerry grew up in the loving care of his foster family, the Canedo’s, where he learned to embrace his Filipino culture. He carried his heritage deep in his heart and was also a proud member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

Gerry served his country with distinction, earning an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. He then embarked on a successful career at Boeing for over 40 years, first as a draftsman and then as a project manager, where his leadership left a meaningful impact at the aerospace company. Beyond his professional pursuits, Gerry was deeply dedicated to his community, volunteering his time and expertise to St. Vincent De Paul as an Outreach Team member and took on leadership roles as Council Secretary, Conference Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President.

A man of many talents, Gerry was an exceptional artist known for his free-hand illustrations, cartoons, and technical drafting. His spirit was nourished when he pursued his love for adventure and the great outdoors. Whether helming any one of his many motorboats and RV’s over the years, water skiing, motorbiking, ATV riding, or camping (and sometimes “glamping” if the occasion called for it) —he embraced every moment with enthusiasm as he was surrounded by loved ones. Always looking to excel in a pursuit and then share his hard-earned experience, Gerry was a proficient snowboard instructor at Snoqualmie Summit, inspiring others well into his late 70s as he “shredded and raged” down the slopes of Snoqualmie Summit and Kamloops, Canada, alongside friends and family.

Gerry’s creativity also expressed itself in his love for motion and dance. An avid martial artist, Gerry proudly earned his second-degree black belt in Shorin Ryu karate, studying under Sensei Jerry Gould. He was passionate about roller skating for most of his life and actively competed alongside his wife, Rosita. He cherished his coffee chats with his skating buddies and could often be found in a group of friends talking about anything and everything. He enjoyed time on the dance floor, performing the rumba, swing and other timeless dances.

Those who knew Gerry will remember his easy going nature, quick wit, and infectious sense of humor. He was always ready with a story or a joke, bringing light and warmth to every room he entered. He took great care to share his knowledge and wisdom, both formally and informally, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He led a life of quiet discipline and always strove to do what he thought was right – and encouraged those closest to him to do so too.

Gerry is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife, whom he married on August 25, 2001 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish in Spanaway, WA: Rosita Mayo; children: James Mayo (partner Heather Smith), Lisa A. Mayo (husband Austin Chavira), and his late son Corey Mayo; stepchildren: Rodney Harrison (wife Shamra Harrison), Wayne K. Murray (wife Teresa M. Murray), Troy A. Murray (wife Valarie Murray), Aaron S. Nelson (wife Kimberly Nelson); grandchildren: Drew Shampine, Brandon K. Murray, Taya N. Murray, Ethan S. Nelson, and Corbin P. Nelson. His legacy of love, laughter, and adventure lives on through them and the countless other lives he touched.

Funeral services will be held on March 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Holy Disciples Parish in Puyallup, with a Celebration of Life at the Puyallup Elks Club at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent De Paul in honor of his commitment to community service.

Gerry's journey was marked by courage, creativity, and compassion. He embraced life fully and loved deeply. His adventurous spirit, artistic soul, and unwavering generosity will be dearly missed but forever remembered.

Rest in peace, Gerry. Your light will continue to shine in our hearts.
