Obituary Francis D. Leonard Francis Donald Leonard, 78, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday April 19, 2008. Frank was born on July 22, 1929 to Frank and Elizabeth Leonard in New York City, NY. He was the only child. As a young man Frank enlisted in the Air Force on January 5, 1951 and was honorably discharged on December 22, 1954. In 1955 Frank met the woman of his dreams, Marian Patricia Carroll, and after a short engagement, they married on December 1, 1956. Frank and Marian celebrated 50 years of marriage with friends and family at the Tacoma Yacht Club in 2006. He spent his entire career working for the Federal Aviation Administration with stops in Ballston Spa, NY, Rock Springs Wyoming, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and in Tacoma, WA where he retired in 1989. In addition to his family, Frank had a passion for rescuing stray dogs from the street or the Humane Society. If he and Marian happened upon a lost pup walking the streets, there was a good chance that dog would find its way into the heart and home for Frank. Frank and Marian were active members of St. Mary's Catholic Church where they developed many strong friendships. The church became their spiritual and social network for many years. His many interests included collecting miniature soldiers, sailing, boating, opera and trains. He was a member of the Tacoma Yacht Club, Tacoma Power Squadron, and Garden Club Railroad. Frank was especially proud of his children and grandchildren, his puppies and Alex the cat. "Frank was our St. Francis." Frank is survived by his wife Marian, five children Patricia Seib (Jonathan), Michael Leonard (Kathy), Joan Leonard-Welch, Steve Leonard (Heather), and Brian Leonard (Marta), and twelve grandchildren; Austin, Taylor and Alexa Welch, Braden Robinson, Cameron Seib, Jordan and Jacob Leonard, Jessie Rapozo, Cloie and Brian Leonard, and Garrett and Shea Leonard. Frank's family would like to thank MultiCare Hospice care for the special care provided in his final days, and all of his friends and family who provided support and prayer. His service will be held Thursday April 24 at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 757 138th St. S. Tacoma, Washington 98444, with burial to follow at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St., Covington, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or the Pierce County Humane Society. Please leave online condolences at www.GaffneyCares.com.
