Eunice Ione (Hall) Hughes

Obituary IONE HUGHES   Eunice Ione Hughes (Hall) was born in Sheyenne, ND on October 12, 1920, and passed away on January 6, 2016 in Tacoma, WA. Ione was raised in New Rockford. She graduated in 1939 and moved to Portland, OR, where she worked for Walgreens as a bookkeeper. After a year in Sacramento, she returned to Portland to work for Oregon Physicians and Dental Services until 1944, when she married John H Hughes Jr, a dental student. A year later they moved to Tacoma where they lived until John was called into active duty (Army), and the family moved to Germany. They returned to Tacoma and the children attended Holy Cross, Bellarmine, Aquinas, Gonzaga, and WSU. Ione was a founding member of the Tacoma Dental Auxiliary, a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital, a Cub Scout leader, and a Holy Cross bridge club member for over 50 years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing, boating, baking, family holidays, and traveling. She attended many musicals and trips with the Tacoma Musical Playhouse. She visited almost all 50 states and 17 countries, and at age 65 climbed Mt. Vesuvius in Italy! Ione is survived by 3 children: John (Kathy), Mary Kay, & Nancyann (Greg); 10 grandchildren: Jeff, Ryan, Matthew, Tyler, John IV, Laurie, Nick, Laura, Lisa, & Jack; and 6 great-grandchildren: Lily, Ava, Logan, Lincoln, Noah, Andy. She was preceded in death by her husband John, parents Harold and Nellie Moe Hall, brothers Darrell and Dale, sister Ovie Miller, and son David. Ione is also survived by her brother Lowell (Betty), sister Doris Kay Heigel (Wayne), brother-in-law David Hughes (Lois), daughter-in-law Carm Hughes, sister-in-law Jo Anne Hall, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, May 2nd at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Tacoma.
