Long-time Tacoma resident, Esther Kosin, passed away on January 25, 2021. She was 90 years old.
Mrs. Kosin was born Esther Notrica on May 3, 1930 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Morris and Amelia Notrica, who immigrated to California from the island of Rhodes. It was while visiting relatives in Seattle in 1953 that Esther met Seattle native Allen (Buddy) Kosin. The couple wed and moved to Tacoma in 1954 where they raised their three children, Emilie, Melanie and Mark. After the children grew up and left home, Esther began helping her husband and son in the family business, Top Kick Jewelry and Loans in Parkland. She was affectionately called “mom” by many of the store’s regular customers.
Esther was an avid reader, especially of autobiographies, and had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of vintage Hollywood movies. In her younger years she also derived great pleasure from working in her yard. Her family fondly remembers her lifelong sweet tooth and her special fondness for See’s candy; the family house was rarely without a box.
She is survived by her husband, Buddy, daughter and son-in-law Emilie and Jordan Schwartz, daughter Melanie Sherwood and son and daughter-in-law Mark and Linda Kosin, as well as six grandchildren.
Due to the pandemic, no memorial is currently planned. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Temple Beth El or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
