Elizabeth Smith

October 20, 1932 — February 12, 2015

Obituary Betty Smith Elizabeth Jane Mary McGinty Smith was born in Philadelphia October 20, 1932, the daughter of Irish immigrants Connell McGinty and Elizabeth McCarthy. Betty died in Tacoma on February 12, 2015 at the age of "39". Betty began as a volunteer in the office of Bellarmine Prep in 1973. It quickly evolved into a full time position and she eventually transitioned from volunteer to staff. Her title may have been Office Manager but we all know she ran the school. Betty reluctantly retired in 1994 after her first stroke made her unable to meet her own high standards. Betty loved her time at Bellarmine and cherished the many friends she made there. Betty was proud of her children Joseph and Mary Eileen and adored her three grandsons TJ, Jack and Charlie. She would make them tea, and they all wanted her to be their pinochle partner. Betty's husband Jim lost the love of his life. They were married on her birthday in 1956 so that he would have only one date to remember to buy a Hallmark card each year. Betty will be remembered for her intense faith in God and the Blessed Mother, for her Irish tenacity, for her love of tea and cookies, for sending birthday cards, and for loving every person she encountered. The world was a better place because of Elizabeth Jane Mary McGinty Smith and those of us who were privileged to know her and love her were blessed indeed. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 7:00pm at Gaffney Funeral Home Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 27, 2015 at 11:00am at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Smith-McGinty endowment fund at Bellarmine Prep. Please leave online condolences at www.gaffneycares.com. Arrangements by Gaffney Funeral Home, 253-572-6003.
