Donald Stevens Allen Jr. passed away on October 2, 2022, in Tacoma, Washington. Don was born in Burlington, Vermont on May 13, 1926, to Donald S Allen and Mildred A. (Lombard) Allen. He was raised on a farm by his grandparents George K. Lombard and Lucy E. (Vasseur) Lombard. Don graduated from Essex High School in Essex Junction, Vermont in 1944. After graduation, he served one year in the Army at Fort (Camp) Campbell, Kentucky.
After he left the Army, Don moved to Tacoma in the mid 1940's to join his mother and grandparents. He attended the University of Puget Sound and worked at Ohio Ferro Alloys. Don joined the singles group of the Knights of Columbus, the Cardinal Club, where he met his future wife Marjorie E (McDonald) Allen. They were married on October 10, 1959, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Tacoma. They had three children, Robert, John, and Mary.
In 1967 Don fulfilled his dream of opening a stamp shop. He started The Collector's Nook on 6th Avenue in Tacoma, then in 1971 bought a building on North I Street in Tacoma. Don was in business for 53 years selling stamps, postcards, magazines, old newspapers, books, records, and jewelry. He belonged to the Tacoma Stamp Club, Seattle Stamp Club, and Olympia Stamp Club. Don also belonged to the Seattle Old Time Radio Club and had numerous old-time radio recordings.
In his younger days Don enjoyed bowling, gardening, photography, and skiing.
In later years Don traveled to Vermont to visit relatives and buy antiques. He also had a vegetable garden in the backyard of his shop on North I Street.
Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie E Allen, sons Robert J. Allen and John M. Allen, both of Tacoma, Washington, daughter Mary J. (Allen) McFarland and her husband Steven A McFarland, both of Lake Linden, Michigan, grandchildren Brian A McFarland and Julia E McFarland, both of Lake Linden, Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Donald S Allen of Burlington, Vermont, and Mildred A. (Allen) Clark of Tacoma, Washington, grandparents George K. Lombard and Lucy E. Lombard, both of Tacoma, Washington, and sister Madeline E (Allen) Ingalls of Morrisville, Vermont.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at the Calvary Cemetery Chapel, in Tacoma, Washington followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place following internment at Meadow Park Golf Course at approximately 2:00 PM.
