Donald J. Mescher

Obituary Donald J. Mescher, a Tacoma resident since 1955, passed away on July 10 90th birthday. He was born in Burlington, Iowa, and moved to Los Angeles, California with his family when he was three years old. After serving in the Merchant Marines during WW II, he started a construction business in Springfield, Missouri, where he met his first wife, Martha Dixon. He went on to work for Simpson Lumber Co. and Northwest Door. In 1957, Don and a business partner started Spokane Plywood; four years later they opened Midway Plywood in Federal Way. In 1987, Don suffered the loss of his first wife and retired from his business in Federal Way. Don became a member of the Tacoma Yacht Club in 1969. He joined Emmanuel Lutheran Church in 1988. he was a member of the International Order of Hoo-Hoo, a fraternal organization made of individuals in the forest products industry. In 2003, he was honored as a 50-year member of Hoo-Hoo. In 1993, Don married Jacqueline Jensen and lived out his years in University Place with her daughters, Maureen and then Cherry, whose help made it possible for them to remain in their home. Don was a loving, giving soul who gave completely of himself to everyone. He survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and her four daughters; his children: Margie Heritage (Andy Harris), Tacoma; David Mescher (Vicky), Austin, TX; Laurie Mescher, Seattle; a sister: Sr. Alma Louise Mescher, and five grandchildren. Two sisters preceded him in death. A Memorial Service celebrating Don's life will be held Saturday, July 15th at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Lutheran Church 1315 North Stevens.
