David J. Stiltner passed away on December 1, 2024, at the age of 63. Born on November 7, 1961, in Tacoma, Washington, Dave lived and worked in the Puget Sound area all of his life.
David graduated from Lincoln High School and went on to the University of Washington where he studied economics and played trombone in the Husky Marching Band. He spent his summers studying at University of California Berkeley, pursuing subjects outside his major to broaden his knowledge. His love of music kept him active with the Husky Alumni Band for decades after college; performing regularly at a multitude of events and marching in countless Seafair Parades.
Professionally, David had a successful career as a government contractor, owning and operating Totem Janitorial, LLC. This was no surprise as his entrepreneurial spirit was evidenced as far back as his early teens when he started in the retail fireworks industry. Over his 50 year career in fireworks, he gained a large client base that relied on his creativity and expertise. He played a pivotal role in the growth and continued success of the family business, Fireworks Outpost.
Dave was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church, where he served on the Board of Directors for several years. He was also a proud member of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians.
Personally, Dave was a critical thinker and avid reader. He had a broad knowledge base which often made him the “go to” person for fact checking, especially on Husky sports or family history. He had a deep appreciation for classical music, though his music tastes were eclectic. His empathetic demeanor made him a favorite with animals, as pets of all kinds were always drawn to him.
Dave enjoyed driving and went on many road trips. The family vacation home at Kalaloch Beach was a special place for him, and he visited there often. His passion for boating began in childhood and continued throughout his life. He eventually owned a boat and enjoyed taking his friends out on the Puget Sound whenever he could.
David is survived by his brother, Sam Stiltner (Mary); his sister, Katie Flannigan (Kevin); and his niece, Anna Stiltner. He was known for his quiet generosity, always offering help without seeking recognition. His genuine nature and warm spirit will be deeply missed by his family, friends, business associates, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held at the Puyallup Tribal Funeral Center (3507 E McKinley Ave, Tacoma, WA 98404) on December 14th at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Tacoma-Pierce County Humane Society.
