David Allen Sklar passed away on September 30, 2019 in Tacoma, Washington. He was born in Newark, New Jersey on December 19, 1942. He would often tell the story that as soon as he could talk he asked his family to move him to the south. He spent most of his early years in Spartanburg, South Carolina, followed by Jackson, Mississippi. His identity as a southern gentleman formed over those years and is reflected in his choice of universities.
His earned his undergraduate degree at Tulane University and his Juris Doctor at the University of Texas. After law school graduation David worked at NASA until he was drafted into the army. He proudly served 22 years in the Judge Advocate General Division and then retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He soon after joined a law firm practice where he eventually became a partner before retiring completely in his mid-60s.
David will be remembered for many wonderful things. He charmed men and women with his graciousness, wit, and complete recollection of the smallest of details when it came to personal matters. He could answer every question on Jeopardy and remember every person’s name in a room. He was a true entertainer, and his brown eyes would twinkle when he would start a great story or begin a joke.
He leaves behind his B’sheret - Deborah Sklar; two children - Mikey and Tara Sklar; and grandson – Kai Neyland. On countless occasions, David’s humour and love for a good joke was a constant source of comic relief. He had his family and friends laughing and enjoying the special moments of life until his final days. He brought goodness and fun to all our lives, and we will fondly remember the best dressed gentleman in the room.
Family and friends are welcome to join us in a Celebration of his life to be held at Temple Beth El on October 27 at 3 pm.
Donations to Franciscan Hospice and Palliative Care are warmly accepted in David’s name. They did everything they could to support the whole family while we made our final good-byes. Here is a link for more information on how to donate; do specify Hospice.
