Charles Gavigan

February 23, 1922 — January 4, 2008

Obituary Charles Gavigan died peacefully on January 4, 2008, in Tacoma, WA. He was born in Donegal, Ireland, on February 23, 1922, and immigrated to Tacoma in 1948. Charlie married his Irish sweetheart in 1955, and spent the next 51 years with her until she preceded him in death in 2006. Charlie joined the Northern Pacific Railroad shortly after coming to Tacoma and quickly worked his way up to engineer, retiring from what had become the Burlington Northern. He loved family camping trips, visiting his family in Ireland, cheating at cribbage, and specially enjoyed playing with his grandkids and great-grandkids. Daily rosaries and attending mass were an important part of his life. Charlie had a trickster's sense of humor, and liked to debate just about anything because he was always right. His family, friends and neighbors knew him to be willing to help them at any time with a story and a laugh. Charlie is survived by his 5 children, Charlie (Toni), Patrick, Sheila, Mary (Dan Rooth), and Jim (Melissa); his seven grandchildren Curt, Kaitlin, Kiara, Michaela, Shelby, Maiti, and Julia; his two great grandchildren Ben and Brady; and numerous relatives and friends. Charlie and Nana are together again where they belong: Erin Go Braugh until we meet again dad, grandpa, friend. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 11:00 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Tacoma reception to follow. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 7:00 pm at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Please leave condolences online at www.GaffneyCares.com. Arrangements by Gaffney Funeral Home 253-572-6003.
